Submissions
All submissions should be sent to
submissions@crossedgenres.com. Write "Submission: Fiction", "Submission: Non-Fiction" or "Submission: Artwork"
and your name in the Subject line of the email. Be certain that your email includes:
(Crossed Genres will never sell, give or in any way distribute your personal information.)
Simultaneous submissions are all right, but tell us if that's the case, and tell us immediately if your
submission is accepted elsewhere. Multiple submissions are accepted and encouraged. Turnaround time for responses
is a maximum of 60 days.
Fiction
Fiction submissions should be 1,000 to 8,000 words long, in .doc, .docx or .rtf format. Use a standard font like
Times New Roman or Arial, in 12 pt. Either Standard Manuscript Format or Internet formatting is fine.
Your submission must contain elements of both the current genre and Science Fiction
and/or Fantasy.
What are we looking for? There is no hard-and-fast rule; any story that follows the above guidelines will
be considered. We tend to favor character-driven stories, but that doesn't mean we won't appreciate a
strong action piece. Make your characters fascinating and your plot engaging.
(And one more tip: get your story proofread. Poor grammar and punctuation won't make us dismiss your story,
but it doesn't win you any points either.)
Nonfiction
Nonfiction submissions should be 500 to 3,000 words long, in .doc, .docx or .rtf format. Use a standard font like
Times New Roman or Arial, in 12 pt. Either Standard Manuscript Format or Internet formatting is fine.
What are we looking for? There are two types of nonfiction we want:
Art
What are we looking for? Each issue contains 1 work of color Cover art and 2-4 smaller black-&-white works
of inside art.
Cover art (color) must contain elements of both the current monthly genre and Science Fiction
and/or Fantasy (Just like Fiction submissions). Cover art should be approximately 18" W x 11.5" H, or in similar proportions.
Because the cover art will wrap around to the back cover, the focus of the image should be in the right half of
the image!
Inside art (b&w) can relate to the current monthly genre, Science Fiction or Fantasy, or any combination
of the three. Inside art can be in any proportions, and doesn't need to be focused to one side or the other.
We prefer .jpeg files for artwork submissions. Please send a medium-resolution image; if we accept your artwork
we will ask you to provide a higher-resolution version.
Due to limited time (we work full-time jobs, too!), rejected submissions will probably receive a form letter via email.
We apologize for these impersonal responses; they do not reflect on the quality of your work!
Rights & Payment
If your submission is selected, Crossed Genres takes First World Electronic Rights, and non-exclusive electronic rights
thereafter (so we can archive your story on the site). We also claim First World Print Rights for the production of our
limited print edition, and non-exclusive anthology rights.
Selected submissions will receive as payment one (1) gratis copy of the limited-edition printed issue in which
the contribution appears. At this time Crossed Genres cannot offer any further compensation for selected
submissions beyond the exposure of being published in the magazine. It is our fervent hope that we will
eventually become a paying market. If it happens you'll be the first to know after us!
If you still aren't clear on how to submit, please email us at cg@crossedgenres.com.
